Since 2013, the 6 Brazilian and 2 French musicians developed their multiple festive jazz spectacle in the streets and in the concert halls around Brazil. In 2016 they released their first album Caos Cosmos e Damião and made a tour in France. In 2017 an even bigger tour of Europe ensued, including festivals like Afrobanana in Cyprus, Bascherdeis in Italy and the Festival de Monastier in France.
Bagunço's mission is bring joy to experiment, be it musicwise or in the activist political domain, Bagunço is a deviant force in brazil's contemporary music landscape.
Born as a street only band, Bagunço has diversified its audience playing in very different areas throughout the city, always being present in popular parties and in the favelas.
Be it playing in public hospitals or taking part in public demonstrations, Bagunço has organized events in all regions of Rio de Janeiro, an opposing trend to the concentration of culture in the south zone.
Bagunço maintains the roots it established in its first years, and has as a goal to expand upon its musical language, including both folkloric and urban elements in an effort to bind together the unequal social and cultural factors that add up to the ever changing face of brazilian music.
Yes
Bagunço has developed its sound and stage persona with the restless interest of sharing, both in an artistic and a political sense. Within the context of a festival of activist street bands this willingness to join in with others in claiming the public space to art would be truly fulfilled. It is the perfect platform for expressing everything Bagunço is about.
Bagunço is the only case of a carioca group that is at the same time a street band, an autonomous street parade Bloco in the carnival, and also a fanfare in the burgeoning neo fanfarrist movement. Share our experience in activism and energy in performing is our ultimate goal.
Bagunço has been involved in the celebrated "Doutores da Alegria" project to bring music to public hospitals in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The band has also maintained its constant presence in non-commercial gigs in areas of Rio such as recently taking part in the Barracão project in the suburb of Duque de Caxias.
The artistic occupation of public space in Rio, that is unabashedly supported by the band, is a constant fight for survival, given the recent military intervention that took over the government of the state, as well as the conservative preacher Mayor that seeks to enforce cultural activities out of public venues.
Bagunço is made of a sexually diverse ensemble, which contemplates both straight and bissexual men. Furthermore the band also includes members that come from different regions of Brazil, namely the North, Northeast and Southeast, together with two french members, aggregating a complex palette of influences and cultural perspectives.
