8-Bit Brass Band is your geeky local mobile brass band specializing in bringing our brand of brassy, bangy, and nerdly to the streets and stages of Seattle — and beyond!

What is your band’s mission?

8-Bit Brass Band sparks nostalgia to connect audiences with our brand of brassy, bangy, and nerdly fun. We respect one another and our fans, stay flexible at all times, and have fun doing so.

Does your band consider itself an activist street band?

Yes

What do you think your band could contribute to a festival of activist street bands?

We all have many different kinds of shells we dwell in -- some self-imposed and others imposed by society. Being a "nerd" or "geeking out" over any passion is something we embrace and hope to connect with someone who thinks they may be alone in their shell by putting ourselves out there through music and related hijinx. We love that moment when one person in the audience is stunned hearing a song from their childhood they didn't know they knew.

What activities have you participated in recently to support your community or causes that you care about?

Last year many of our members volunteered for Honk! Fest West as we were down a trumpet player and couldn't participate as a band. Recently, we've donated our time to a fundraiser for Seattle Children's hospital and provided the soundtrack for participants in Seattle's March for Science.

In what ways do you support diversity in your band?

Costume helps visually level cultural and other differences and we cosplay big. Showing that expression breaks down barriers of all kinds, in our opinion, and helps audiences set aside their prejudices. Also, our "Respect" tenet is core because starting with respect practices value for everyone -- not just a priviledged majority.

What proportion of gigs for the band are commercial gigs?

35
