Band promo hi-res photo

The Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band is a large, not-for-profit, “raucous, stomp-your-foot-and-belt-out-the-choruses” activist New Orleans-style street band based in Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to fight for social justice causes and support community events while having fun and spreading joy through our music. We are also a part of the organizing force behind HONK!, a festival of activist street bands that takes place every October in Somerville’s Davis Square.

What is your band’s mission?

Our mission is to fight for social justice causes and support community events while having fun and spreading joy through our music.

Does your band consider itself an activist street band?

Yes

What do you think your band could contribute to a festival of activist street bands?

As the founding group of HONK Somerville, we will help organize the festival and engage the local community to ensure that the activist causes of all attending bands -- including Second Line -- are heard.

What activities have you participated in recently to support your community or causes that you care about?

In the fall we played at the funeral services for Horace Seldon, a longtime racial justice activist from Boston.

We recently played at an event held to support Parts and Crafts, a local organization running education and play programs for children.

In a few days we will be supporting the affordable housing organization Just-A-Start by providing the entertainment for their annual event.

In what ways do you support diversity in your band?

We try to consider diversity whenever we make decisions about including new members.

In addition, we organize monthly discussion on political and social issues. These are designed to bring out diverse points of view and to build understanding within our group so that we can engage diverse points of view outside our group.
