Unidos do Swing

Band promo hi-res photo

Unidos do Swing is a brazilian street brass band that loves to mix traditional jazz music with brazilian carnival.
The fanfare, created in 2014, was inspired by the tradition of New Orleans street parades; envolving a group of street artists from São Paulo, mixing music, dance and circus. The group presents original tunes, Swing Jazz songs, Grooves, Marchinhas, Baião and other Brazilian rhythms.
Along the year, the group coordinate weekly open rehearsals in public space (MASP - Art Museum of São Paulo).
Between 2014 and 2018 the group has organized 4 carnival parades, participated in the protest against the end of our Ministry of Culture in Funarte 2016, made musical actions in public libraries (Circuito Municipal de Cultura SP 2016), participated of 2 Honk Festival Rio de Janeiro and organized, along other fanfares, the first Honk São Paulo in 2017.
Troughout the years, we have partner up with several art colectives such as the lindy hop iniciative Jazz na Rua and the weekly circus training Circo no Beco. Both movements also defend ocupation of public space with art.
Beside the street open shows the group has played in the main jazz club of São Paulo: Jazz nos Fundos, joined the Circuito Sesc de Artes 2018 visiting 6 cities of the São Paulo state.

What is your band’s mission?

In a city where the limit between public and private space gets more blurred everyday, we defend the occupation of public spaces with art. Personally, we are mostly inspired by street music, circus and dance performances.
We are living a dark political moment. Over the years, São Paulo has seen the prevailing of privatizing financial logic above the population rights. Against that, we’ve been occupying the streets for the last four years with weekly opened rehearsals(completely free of charge), as well as horizontal musical practices, public concerts and workshops. Whit this actions we aim to support the development of a growing Jazz and Brass music scene in our city.

Does your band consider itself an activist street band?

Yes

What do you think your band could contribute to a festival of activist street bands?

Within the perspective of a cross-cultural exchange, Unidos do Swing can offer:

- Workshops on Brazilian music: rhythms and musicality, relationships between Brazilian grooves and Jazz.
- Keynote on the social history of Brazilian music.
- Improvisational musical practices with other street bands, creating a tune for the Honk! parade.

We strongly believe that the Honk festival brings together people that share political and social concerns. The mutual exchange of stories, music and impressions would be inspiring. We truly endorse in horizontal ways of organizing collective projects. We organized along with other fanfares, for the first time a Honk festival in São Paulo, and we seek to share and learn together more from Honk!

What activities have you participated in recently to support your community or causes that you care about?

Every year, we organize our independent street Carnival parade as the Bloco Unidos do Swing in São Paulo downtown. Envolving over 70 artists (musicians, dancers and circus performers) and thousands of Jazz enthusiastics integrating part of an underground cultural movement. This year we had arround 2000 participants that went out to street to share an acoustic opened carnival.
Over the year, we organize public open rehearsals integrating professional and newcomers in the style of Jazz and Brass music.
Some of us actively participate in the debate about the public space in São Paulo, participating on the formulation of our present Busking Act.
In 2017, we were part of the 1st Honk São Paulo organization committee, bringing together more than 100 musicians, one international guest, along with 17 Brass Bands from different brazilian cities representing their own local scene. The festival was crowdfunded by passing the hat on public events, and over the internet trought this campaign www.partio.com.br/projeto/honk-sp .
