emperor norton's stationary marching band

Band promo hi-res photo

Before passing from this plane in 1880, Emperor Norton, I, revealed to his followers that he was no
ordinary mortal man, but instead a manifestation of the absurd and unusual forces of the universe. He
offered them the chance to follow him on his crusade to unsettle and disturb that which had become
bland and banal. A grand parade ensued and continues on through time and space, bringing in its wake
a glorious commotion that encourages all to join in the jubilation and make of this world what they will.
ENSMB is the progeny of this bizarre cavalcade. They dance at the edge of reason, sing the song of
society's fringe and drum out whatever din you are called to march to. Emperor Norton is not dead; he is
waiting to be awakened in each of us.

What is your band’s mission?

Spreading their gospel of spontaneous creativity and rampant self-expression, ENSMB brings a passion
and playfulness to the stage that challenges audiences to not just sit and watch the world around them,
but instead rise up and join the show of life, in all its wondrous variety. With their festive and frolicking
vibe, you better believe that ENSMB will have you not just dancing, but oohing and aahing over the
musical feats you'll witness, and maybe even wishing that you too could run away and join the circus.

Does your band consider itself an activist street band?

Sometimes, but not exclusively

What do you think your band could contribute to a festival of activist street bands?

We love participating in the HONK community. We engage musically and creatively with many other bands, and feel we bring a unique approach and perspective to the HONK family. Likewise, we are inspired by so much of what we see and hear at HONK, and do our best to funnel all of that back into what we do as a band.

What activities have you participated in recently to support your community or causes that you care about?

We are active in the Boston arts community and are constantly striving to share our songs and approach to music with as many artists and audiences as we can.

In what ways do you support diversity in your band?

The only requirement for being in our band is musical ability. We welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. However, since we try to keep our band size relatively small, we only do active recruitment when we have specific roles that need to be filled.
