10am – 11:30am – Learning, HONK!-Style: An Alternative Model for Music Education?
Are there innovative principles of teaching and learning that define HONK! practice as distinct from other forms of music education? What implications do these have for the way we teach and learn music?
This session will be structured in two parts:
- Short panel framing the issues followed by large group discussion
- Hands-on demonstration of learning HONK!-style (Bring Instruments)

12:30 – 2:00pm – The Roots and Routes of HONK!: A History of HONK! through Music
The history of HONK! and critical reflection on its cultural practices through an analysis of the circulation of repertoire. How and where do HONK! musicians get exposed to the music they choose to play? What influences their choices? What is the statement these bands are trying to make with their musical selections?
12:30 – 2:00pm – HONK! Activism: Experiential Education in Action
How do the ways in which these bands organize themselves, the music they choose to play, and the spectacle they choose to perform convey their resistance to injustice and indifference, their sense of joy and social transformation, and their vision for a better world? What are the most effective strategies for HONK! bands to demonstrate their commitment to these ideals. How can HONK! retain its progressive edge without becoming doctrinaire or exclusionary?
