We’re closing Elm Street to cars and turning it into a dynamic arena for interactive art making and activism. Please join in — work with our amazing HONK! artists to create something for yourself or for the Sunday Parade. Learn about some urgent issues with the grass roots volunteers and organizers working on community issues. Help amplify messages for positive change and activist causes with art!
- Muralist Liz LaManche: Use paint and stencils to transform the asphalt of Elm Street, bringing river water, fish, native plants, and pollinators into Davis Square to celebrate a healthy and resilient ecosystem!
- Sara Peattie/Puppeteers Coop: Make fish puppets to advocate for a clean Alewife Brook and Mystic River — bring your finished fish and join the Sunday Parade the next day!
- Michelle Lougee, Eileen Ryan and Beyond Plastics Greater Boston: String bottle caps and other single-use consumer plastic trash onto a 100 foot plastic rope — part of fishing gear salvaged by Cape Cod’s Coastal Studies; this sculpture will be used at protests to represent plastic pollution in the oceans. Make a fish rattle from plastic water bottles to carry in the parade. Learn about pending legislation and what you can do.
- Art Group of Extinction Rebellion/Boston: ilkscreen a patch, flag or t-shirt with colorful graphics and messages to raise awareness of the climate crisis and urge action! Join XR in the Sunday HONK! Parade.
- Bread & Puppet: the artists of this awesome collective in Vermont install a series of vivid painted banners in a visual parade down the street.
Pat Falco and Tim Devin invite you to shoot hoops to explore the challenges of staying in your neighborhood with pressures of gentrification, discrimination and skyrocketing rents.
Sara Peattie will make fish with festival goers to advocate for clean water in the Alewife Brook; join Big Blue and other water spirits in the parade on Sunday with your own fish.
